Coworkers may notice problems with a fellow employee long before the supervisor does. There are many signs of substance abuse in the workplace that can help to identify a potential problem. The following is a list of behaviors and patterns that you may see a coworker exhibiting. Some of these signs and symptoms could be due to a physical ailment or another type of issue. However, if you ignore these behaviors you are helping someone to stay sick. Notify your supervisor if you have a concern about someone at work. How To Recognize If A Coworker Has A Problem:

    Workplace Impairment

    • Smelling like alcohol at work
    • Sleeping on the job
    • Slurred, rambling, or pressured speech
    • Confusion
    • Unsteady gait
    • Deterioration of physical appearance
    • Nodding off
    • Mood swings/belligerent


    Excessive Absenteeism

    • No call no show
    • Frequent call offs/sick days
    • Patterns of absences (days after payday or Friday/Mondays)
    • On the job absences (frequent trips to the parking lot, restroom, or other areas of the building they do not belong in)


    Concentration Problems

    • Comprehension difficulty
    • Changing moods after lunch or breaks
    • Alternating periods of high and low productivity


    Financial

    • Theft of company or personal property
    • Attempts to borrow money from coworkers
    • Asking for advance on wages


    Safety

    • Not following safety protocols
    • Accidents in the workplace more likely
